Special Appeals

From time to time we are asked to help with one off funding which is in addition to our usual day to day activities. We are able to apply for help from various charity funds and we will always explore every opportunity, but experience has shown that a Special Appeal works well and our supporters are keen to help out.

We will ensure that any money donated for Special Appeals is used only for that Appeal and will give regular updates on progress.

aged seven

Please click on this link for details

AQMAL APPEAL - PROGRESS:

Funds needed:    RM   22,500

For two operations not including travel costs, medication and follow up visits (Unless there is a problem there should be no more follow up visits until after the second operation).

Funds raised:
up to 28.10.11  RM  29,738.60

Funds spent:
up to 27.09.11  RM  13,552.00   (see below).

Aqmal's first operation was carried out at Penang Adventist Hospital on 2 September and he was discharged on 9 September. The consultant is very happy with the outcome and everyone has remarked on what a brave boy he is. Although shy, he is a very special little boy. His next appointment will be 22 September but the future number and frequency of follow up visits can only be determined at each appointment.

The final operation will take place any time between 3 and 6 months dependent on when the cartilage is soft.

To date expenditure from the funds has been the hospital account of RM 12,057 plus the first consultation fee of RM 185 making a total of RM 12,242 and expenses associated with the first visit, which we kept to the absolute minimum of RM 816.

Firefly sponsored the flight cost (not taxes) for the flight to Penang and Sheila's trip back the next day. They have indicated that they are prepared to donate further flights but only for Aqmal and his mother, Azlina. Aqmal was not allowed to fly home this time, but his grandparents arranged his transport from the hospital to the ferry at Kuala Kedah.

Penang Berjaya Hotel not only gave Sheila a complimentary night's stay but also presented Azlina with a beautiful basket of flowers and fruit. Penang Adventist Hospital arranged collection from the airport for Aqmal, Azlina and Sheila and for Lyn when she travelled on discharge day. A delightful Chinese couple who we met on the plane to Penang were interested in the story behind our trip and gave Aqmal some 'pocket' money and wished him lots of luck.

Our thanks to everyone for the donations, those who helped us save on costs and the kindness received.

Update – After First Follow Up visit

The consultant was happy with Aqmal's progress on 22 September and does not need to see him again until the second operation scheduled for February 2012.

We are grateful to Dr Danny for not charging for this consultation.

Update – Final Operation

Aqmal had his second operation on 3 March and a follow up consultation on 29 March. The Consultant is pleased with his progress and will see him again early in April, hopefully signing him off. The 'new' ear has made a huge difference to this great boy. He is very smily and more confident.

As soon as he is signed off we will publish the details of the state of the fund and our intentions for the balance.

Further Update 23.04.12

Aqmal has had 2 post operative follow up visits. Unfortunately as Firefly have changed their flight schedules making it impossible for the visits to be in one day, we have incurred additional costs and this will be the case for what we hope will be the final visit early in July.

The funding position is as follows:

Funds Raised                                      RM 29,858.60
Medical Costs                                      RM 18,953.75
Subsistence, travel costs RM 4,471.05      RM 23,424,80

Balance in Appeal                                 RM   6,433.80

We still have to incur further costs for the July visit, but it is our intention to 'convert' the balance from this Appeal into a Medical
Fund to pay for treatment for underprivileged families.

Mangoes Fund Raising Event – 5 June 2011

This fun event, conceived and organised by Michele and Lutz, raised an amazing RM 12,557 for the Appeal bringing us close to the initial cost of the two operations. Since the event donations totalling RM 450 have been received from people unable to attend bringing the total for the day to RM 13,007!

Guests who attended enjoyed a North Indian Curry cooking demonstration from Jez, ably assisted by Anita. The lunch results were scrumptious. After eating and generally socialising the lunch guests were joined by many others for the Grand Auction and Raffle.

Greg from Big Apple Donuts started off the Auction, Roger took over and finally the hostess finished the remainder of the 40 prizes donated by individuals, companies and resorts. After this we were treated to a Fire Dance spectacle by Ann Victor.

Our thanks to Michele & Lutz for the organisation and donating the cookery class ingredients, the staff at Mangoes, Jez, Anita, Greg, Roger, Ann, all those who donated prizes for the Grand Auction and Raffle and the guests who gave so generously to help this gorgeous little boy.

Although we still need more funds for hospital accommodation, travel, follow up visits etc this amazing result will enable us to make the arrangements for the first operation to be carried out as soon as possible.
